I wrote a couple of songs with the idea that I wanted to mimic the style of other drummers I like.
The first of these was "Levon" - essentially I was playing like Levon Helm from The Band.
The second one was "Something for Corinne" where I was trying to write a very Jimmy Webb mid-60s type of California pop song that would have featured Hal Blaine - legendary session drummer.
So these two are very much a study in contrasts; "Levon" is that very basic homespun Woodstock big pink type of sound where as "Corrine" is a big production - strings horns, two basses, piano - very Wrecking Crew.
I’m very into finding very obscure northern soul songs of the 60’s. Essentially anything Motown or Stax is out. This is regional stuff, but I wanted to write something like that because I love that type of music with pounding drums and a screaming Hammond organ - essentially that’s what "North" is trying to replicate.
"America" is sort of a joke title. Ted is always asking, "Why do you keep putting in those weird America (the band) chords?" You can tell which part of "Amends" I contributed by this alone. In fairness, he had a point. Acoustically it was very "Horse with No Name," so I toughened it up by adding the additional guitars.
